I’ve had mine for about two years now. I like it… just don’t try to make it do more than what it’s really for. Shirting, broadcloth, silk? Sure… all day, every day.
Heavy denim, canvas, heavy vinyl, or sewing leather all the time? Nope…. if you plan on sewing this type of material all the time, forget it. You need a machine made for that type of work or you will spend your time bad mouthing a fine machine.
Home/domestic machines are NOT industrial grade machines or leather machines EVER!!! I grow tired of these machine being sold as “industrial strenght”.
Easy to use, easy to care for, and produces a fine consistent stitch. Oh forget the cheap needles and cheap thread and you’ll save headaches.
I just bought my new Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116 this afternoon after my 25 yo Singer bit the dust and I’m just ecstatic. It sews through four layers of heavy denim and upholstery fabric like it was butter, it’s quiet, my only complaint is sometimes a little too lightweight that I accidentally shove it when I’m sewing, but all in all I am very very pleased and will actually take the free classes offered by the place I bought it from to see what else I can do. Any co. that makes chainsaws, lawnmowers, and sewing machine totally rocks. The hardest part is getting used to the different location of the presser foot lever and the reverse switch, these have become so ingrained over 25 years using the same machine that that’s why I shove the machine with the back of my hand, the singer had a button for reverse, and I keep feeling for the lever in the wrong place. But I’ll get used to it.
Just purchased my Viking Emerald 116 yesterday. Have been sewing ever since. My last machine was 44 years old, I figured it was time for an upgrade. I did not know that I could have been sewing over those blue jeans seams with ease when putting in a new hem; never heard of a stretch stitch; serging thrilled me to death and my old machine weighs as much as a Sherman Tank. I am estatic. Will be taking classes to see what else I have been missing after sewing for 60 years!
I’m new to sewing so I’m taking sewing classes. Its light and has very basic features. I think this is the right machine for beginners like myself who do not want to jump in with both feet and shell out a lot of money in something that may end up collecting dust in the attic. Affordable and easy to use is how I would describe the Viking Emerald 116. I will definitely buy a Viking when the time comes for me to upgrade.
